Truckee River Fishing Report:
Low water levels still plague the Truckee River, but cooler Fall weather and recent wet storms have improved conditions slightly.
Tactics on the Truckee change significantly during low flows. Fish are on edge, and spook easily. Use a stealthy approach, soft casts, and longer leaders. Pay attention to surface eats. Dry fly activity is more consistent during low flows. Nymphs: Stones, caddis larvae, baetis. Dry Flies: Hoppers, Pale Morning Dun (pmd) mayfly, and Blue Wing Olives (bwo).
Also, with less water in the river and limited spawning habitat available to the brown trout this Fall, it will be vital to give space and respect to spawning trout. Keep an eye out for redds, be sure not to wade on 'em.
Pyramid Lake opens up to trout fishing October 1.
Stock up on some heavy tippets (2X 3X) and proven flies (Patriot Midges, Pyramid Brassies, Marabou Midges, Bunny Strippers, diving beetles, wooly worms) and go give yourself a chance at a 20 plus lb. cutthroat.
Also, Stop by the Reno Fly Shop on Friday Oct 3, 2014 from 3-7 pm for a Simms Demo Day. Arlo will be giving a slide show on Pyramid Lake and tying a couple Pyramid flies. Simms Rep, John Sherman will be presenting the great gear Simms has to offer to help keep us warm this winter. Cost is free!
